If you are a student in London, you can avail Transport for London's (TfL) 30% discount on your public transport via the 18+ Student Oyster photocard. But there's more to getting the best deal than just applying for one card, and plenty of students miss out on savings because they don't know the full picture.
In this guide, we try to cover everything: what the student Oyster card is, who can get one, how to apply, what it costs, how to top it up, and the extra tricks that can save you even more.
What Is the 18+ Student Oyster Photocard?
The 18+ Student Oyster photocard is a special version of the standard Oyster card. It looks slightly different because it has your photo printed on it, and it helps you avail discounts that a regular Oyster card doesn't offer.
Specifically, it gives you 30% off adult-rate Travelcards and Bus & Tram Pass season tickets - the weekly, monthly, and annual passes that give you unlimited travel within your chosen zones.
It works across:
- London Underground (the Tube)
- London buses
- Trams
- Docklands Light Railway (DLR)
- London Overground
- Elizabeth line
- Most National Rail services within London zones One thing to be clear about: the 30% discount applies to season tickets only (weekly, monthly, or annual Travelcards and Bus & Tram Passes). It does not discount individual pay-as-you-go (PAYG) single fares. If you only use PAYG, you don't strictly need a student Oyster card - but keep reading, because there's a way to get PAYG discounts too.
Student Oyster Card Prices (2026)
Here's what you'll actually pay for the most common Travelcard zones with the student discount already applied:
| Zone | Weekly | Monthly | Annual |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zone 1 only | £31.20 | £119.90 | £1,248 |
| Zones 1-2 | £31.20 | £119.90 | £1,248 |
| Zones 1-3 | £36.70 | £141.00 | £1,468 |
| Zones 1-4 | £44.90 | £172.50 | £1,796 |
| Zones 1-5 | £53.40 | £205.10 | £2,136 |
These are the discounted student prices. Without the card, the same Zones 1-2 weekly Travelcard costs £44.70, so you're saving roughly £13.50 every week - over £50 a month.
Who Is Eligible for a Student Oyster Card?
You must meet all three of the following conditions:
- Aged 18 or over
- Living at a London address during term time - if you commute from outside London, you won't qualify
- Enrolled in qualifying study, which means one of:
- A full-time course with 15 or more hours of tuition-led or structured learning per week, lasting at least 14 weeks
- A full-time postgraduate programme (studying or writing up for 15+ hours per week)
- A mandatory work placement in London lasting at least 14 weeks (you'll need a letter from your institution confirming this)
- A part-time course lasting 14+ weeks if you receive an NHS bursary (proof required) Your institution must also be registered on the TfL 18+ Student Oyster photocard scheme. Most London universities and colleges are, but it's worth checking with your student services team before you apply.
Part-time students are generally not eligible unless they fall into the NHS bursary category above.
How to Apply for a Student Oyster Card
You can only apply online. There's no paper form or in-station option.
What You'll Need
- An active email address
- Your student enrolment ID from your university or college
- A London borough address (your term-time address)
- A digital photo in .jpg, .bmp, or .gif format, under 6MB
- A debit or credit card for the £21 administration fee
Step-by-Step Application
- Complete your campus enrolment first. Your university needs to have you in their system before they can approve your Oyster application.
- Go to the TfL photocard application page at photocard.tfl.gov.uk.
- Sign in or create a TfL account.
- Select your institution carefully. Some universities have multiple entries (for example, "King's College London" vs "King's College London NHS Foundation Trust"). Picking the wrong one means your application gets rejected by another institution, and you may have to reapply and pay the £21 fee again.
- Enter your course details and student ID, upload your photo, and pay the fee.
- Wait for your university to approve it. This is done by nominated approvers at your institution, not by TfL.
- Your card will be posted to you, usually within 5-10 working days after approval. If your card hasn't arrived after two weeks, you can call TfL on 0343 222 1234 (open 8am-8pm, Monday to Sunday).
Suggestion: Apply as soon as term starts in September. Universities get flooded with applications at the start of the academic year, and approvals can take longer than usual.
How to Top Up Your Student Oyster Card
Once you have your card, you need to load a Travelcard or PAYG credit onto it before you can travel. There are several ways to do this:
- At ticket machines - available at Tube, Overground, and DLR stations. Tap your card on the yellow reader, choose your top-up amount or Travelcard, and pay by cash or card.
- Online via your TfL account - log in, select your card, and add credit or buy a Travelcard. Note: online top-ups can take up to 30 minutes to process and you'll need to tap your card at a station reader to collect the top-up.
- Through the TfL Oyster app - works the same as the website, handy for checking your balance on the go.
- At Oyster Ticket Stops - over 4,000 newsagents across London display a blue Oyster sticker. You can add between £10 and £50 in £5 increments (maximum card balance: £90).
- Auto top-up - set a threshold and your card automatically tops up from your bank card when the balance drops below it. This is useful if you use PAYG regularly.
How to Add a Railcard to Your Student Oyster
Your 18+ Student Oyster photocard gives you 30% off season tickets - but it does nothing for individual PAYG fares. To get discounted PAYG fares as well, you need a 16-25 Railcard linked to your Oyster.
Here's how it works:
- A 16-25 Railcard costs £35 per year and gives you 1/3 off most National Rail fares across the country.
- When you link it to your Student Oyster card, you also get a 34% discount on off-peak PAYG fares and daily caps on the Tube, DLR, London Overground, Elizabeth line, and most National Rail within London.
- Off-peak means outside 06:30-09:30 and 16:00-19:00 Monday to Friday. Weekends and bank holidays are always off-peak. How to add it: Take your Student Oyster card and your 16-25 Railcard to any Underground station and ask a member of staff at the ticket office to add the Railcard discount. It takes a couple of minutes. The discount stays active on your Oyster until your Railcard expires.
If you're aged 26-30, you can use a 26-30 Railcard in exactly the same way.
16+ Zip Oyster Photocard: For Younger Students
If you're 16 or 17 (or turned 18 on or before 31 August and are still in full-time education), you may be eligible for a 16+ Zip Oyster photocard instead. This offers even better discounts:
- Free travel on all London buses and trams
- Half the adult PAYG rate on Tube, DLR, London Overground, Elizabeth line, and most National Rail in London
- Child-rate Travelcard season tickets To be eligible for free bus and tram travel, you must live in a London borough. A parent or guardian needs to apply on behalf of anyone under 18.
The 16+ Zip card costs £22 and you apply online via TfL or at a Post Office in London. Your educational establishment may need to verify your enrolment.
Important: If you turn 18 and no longer meet the 16+ Zip criteria, you'll need to transition to the 18+ Student Oyster photocard to keep getting discounted travel. Using an expired or ineligible Zip card risks a penalty fare.
Managing Your Student Oyster Card Online
Once your card is active, you can manage it through your TfL online account:
- Check your balance and view remaining credit or Travelcard validity
- View journey history to track your travel and spending
- Top up PAYG credit or purchase new Travelcards
- Set up auto top-up so you never run out of credit mid-journey
- Report a lost or stolen card (more on this below) You can log in at tfl.gov.uk/oyster using the email and password you registered with. If you're having trouble logging in, make sure your browser is up to date and cookies are enabled. You can also reset your password through the site.
What Happens If Your Student Oyster Card Is Lost or Stolen
Report it immediately through your TfL online account. This cancels the card so nobody else can use it.
To get a replacement:
- Order one online through your TfL account
- The replacement fee is £11 plus postage for a photocard
- Any PAYG balance and Travelcard (with at least 5 days remaining) will transfer to your new card, as long as you were registered
- If your card was unregistered, you lose everything on it - there's no way to recover the balance While you wait for the replacement (which can take several days), you'll need to pay for travel at full price. TfL generally doesn't refund fares paid during this waiting period for lost or stolen cards. If the card was faulty rather than lost, TfL may offer a refund for interim travel costs.
When Your Card Gets Stopped
Your student Oyster card isn't permanent. It expires when your course or work placement ends, and your university is required to report changes to TfL twice a year. Your card will be stopped if you:
- Graduate
- Withdraw from your course
- Interrupt your studies
- Switch to part-time status If you interrupt and later return, you'll need to re-enrol fully and then submit a fresh application for a new card. If the duration of your course changes (say, from three years to four with a placement year), you may also need to submit a new application to cover the extra time.

Do You Actually Need a Student Oyster Card?
Not every student benefits equally. Before you apply, consider your travel patterns:
- If you commute 4-5 days a week across zones, a discounted weekly or monthly Travelcard almost certainly saves money. Apply.
- If you travel 2-3 days a week, do the maths. PAYG with contactless (which has weekly and daily caps built in) might be cheaper than a Travelcard - even a discounted one. In this case, a standard Oyster or contactless card with a linked 16-25 Railcard might be your best option.
- If you mostly take the bus, a discounted Bus & Tram Pass could still save you money. The single bus fare is £1.75 and capped at £5.25 per day, so compare this against a weekly pass. Use the TfL single fare finder and fare calculator at tfl.gov.uk to compare costs for your specific commute.
